Hey, I'm Jacinta
"I help people see changing coming, think strategically and design better futures."
Futures coach | Strategic advisor | Speaker | Facilitator
The world is changing and the systems we rely on are changing too. The plans that once made sense for our lives, careers and organisations don't always fit the world we're moving into.
I'm Jacinta Robinson, founder of FuturePivots. I help people, businesses and organisations understand what's changing, explore what it could mean, and build the strategies, skills and options to shape what comes next.
I spent 15 years working in national security, futures analysis and strategy, helping government understand emerging risks and threats, identify patterns of change and prepare for different possible futures.
Now, I'm bringing that thinking to the people who need it beyond the walls of government and corporate strategy teams.
The future shouldn't be something only people with power, money and expert advisors get to think about. It should be a skill we all have access to.
The future is everyone's business.
For a long time, futures thinking and strategic foresight have largely belonged to governments, large organisations and people with access to specialist expertise.
Meanwhile, the rest of us have been told to make a plan, work hard, stay the course and trust that things will work out.
But what happens when the world changes around the plan?
When the career you've spent years building starts to look different? When technology changes the way you work? When you're raising children, supporting ageing parents, managing a household and trying to make good decisions about a future that feels increasingly difficult to navigate? Or when you're leading an organisation and the assumptions behind your strategy no longer hold?
Working harder at the old plan in a system that is no longer fit for purpose isn't always the answer.
Sometimes, you need to see the situation differently. Sometimes, you need more options. And sometimes, you need to rethink the direction altogether.
This is where the power of futures thinking comes in.
It gives you the ability to look beyond what's happening today, consider what might happen next, and make better decisions now. It's not predicting the future and instead about building the capability to navigate it.
And I believe it's a skill everyone deserves to learn.
From national security to futures coach
For 15 years, I worked in government and national security, using analytical techniques, futures thinking and strategic assessment to make sense of complex problems. I examined emerging risks, connected seemingly unrelated developments and explored how changes in one part of a system could affect another.
The work was about looking beyond the immediate problem, challenging assumptions and helping decision-makers prepare for more than one possible future.
Then my own life changed.
Becoming a mum shifted my perspective on the future. So did navigating midlife, caring responsibilities and the reality that our personal lives don't operate in neat, separate categories.
Our careers affect our finances. Our health affects our capacity to work. Technology affects our independence. Decisions about our parents affect our children, our time and choices.
And the world around us keeps moving.
I began to see a gap between the sophisticated strategic thinking used to help governments and big companies navigate uncertainty and the practical tools available to ordinary people making consequential decisions about their own future lives.
I knew these tools could be made more accessible, more practical and more relevant to everyday decisions. I knew these tools could give people back the agency and confidence and optimism for the future they felt were being taken away by others and by significant change.
So I created FuturePivots.
To coach people and help them develop the skills to think about the future they want, prepare for different possibilities and make deliberate choices about what happens next.
What I do differently.
I'm not here to tell you to think positively, embrace change or follow a five-step formula for success. And I'm not going to pretend that having a plan means you can control everything that happens to you. My work starts with a different premise: you can’t control every change, but you can improve how you understand it, prepare for it and respond to it.
That means looking at the bigger picture, not just the problem in front of you.It means questioning the assumptions behind the plan you're following. It means considering different possibilities instead of betting everything on one expected outcome. And it means building options before you need them, so you're not starting from scratch when circumstances change.
I bring together futures thinking, systems thinking, strategic planning, risk assessment and practical decision-making to help people move from uncertainty to informed action.
My approach is analytical without being inaccessible, strategic without being abstract, and practical without pretending every problem has a simple solution. Because the goal isn't to remove uncertainty from life. It's to become more capable of navigating it.
The See It. Shape It. Own It. Method
This is the foundation of my work at FuturePivots.
SEE IT | Recognise the signals of change. Understand the forces shaping your world, challenge your assumptions and explore what different developments could mean for you.
SHAPE IT | Turn insight into strategy. Explore your options, test different pathways, identify opportunities and prepare alternative moves rather than relying on one plan.
OWN IT | Make informed decisions and take purposeful action. Build the confidence and capability to adapt when circumstances change, without handing your future over to someone else's assumptions.
It's a practical approach to futures thinking that can be applied to a personal life (before big transitions), a career, a business, a school or an organisation. The context changes. The underlying capability remains valuable.
Where this work takes me
FuturePivots brings together several parts of my work, connected by one central idea: helping people develop the capability to design better futures.
Futures coaching and personal strategy
Helping people navigate transitions, rethink their direction and build practical strategies for their next chapter. This includes midlife, career decisions, family responsibilities and the changes reshaping everyday life.
Strategic advisory and facilitation
Working with leaders and organisations to explore emerging change, challenge assumptions, examine alternative futures and strengthen the strategies they use to make decisions.
Speaking and workshops
Making futures thinking accessible, engaging and useful. I speak and facilitate on strategic foresight, futures literacy, leadership, organisational resilience, technology and the practical business of navigating change.
Education and futures literacy
Helping people develop the skills to think beyond the present, understand complex systems and participate more actively in shaping their futures. I believe these capabilities belong in our schools, workplaces and communities, not just in specialist strategy teams.
Whether I'm working with an individual, a room of leaders or a group of students, my aim is the same: to make strategic foresight something people can actually use.
A little more about me.
I'm a mum, a former national security strategist, a natural futures thinker and someone who is endlessly curious about how the world works. I'm a fiction lover and big fan of the early 2000s shows like Grey's Anatomy and NCIS 😁
I'm interested in the connections other people might miss, the assumptions hiding in plain sight and the small signals that can tell us something bigger is changing.
I'm also interested in what all of that means in practice. Not just for governments or boardrooms, but for the decisions people make in their homes and their workplaces and their communities.
I believe you can look at the future without being frightened of it. You can prepare without living in a state of worry. You can question the status quo without assuming you have all the answers. And you can change direction without treating everything you've done before as a mistake.
My own pivot into building FuturePivots is part of that story. I'm not speaking from a place outside change, looking in. I'm applying the same strategic thinking to my own work and life that I encourage others to develop.
I'm here because I think more people deserve the opportunity to do the same.
